Trio of Spartan Men Score in 4-0 Victory at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio – Sophomore midfielder Chris Cvecko (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored twice as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team (5-1-3) cruised to a 4-0 victory at Hiram College (4-7-1) on Tuesday night.

Cvecko ran his team-best goal total to five, while freshman midfielder Jacob Grindel (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University) and sophomore forward Matthew Zembas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley N.W.) added their fourth and third scores of the season, respectively.

Cvecko opened the scoring at the 7:01 mark when he connected from close range following a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Dean Balabanov (Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Laboratory). Cvecko would strike again in similar fashion in the 33rd minute following a corner by sophomore midfielder Alex Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove).

The score remained 2-0 until 15 minutes into the second period as Grindel collected a pass from junior midfielder Ryan Finstad (Lebanon, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) and blasted a shot past the Hiram goalkeeper. Then, with just under four minutes left in the match, Zembas scored unassisted to bump the lead to 4-0.  

In net, freshman goalkeeper Frank Candau (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) made one save to earn his first collegiate victory.  

For the match, the Spartans dominated in every offensive statistical category with an advantage in shots (12-5), shots on goal (8-1) and corner kicks (8-4).

The Spartans will look to build upon their strong start in the 2013 University Athletic Association opener this Saturday, October 5 versus Brandeis University at 11:00 p.m. at Case Field.
