CHICAGO, Ill. – A goal in the 18th minute lifted the University of Chicago (Ill.) men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory versus visiting Case Western Reserve University during University Athletic Association action on Friday, October 28 at Stagg Field in the opener of a weekend Association doubleheader.
The Spartans fall to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in the UAA and will return to action Sunday, October 30, when they travel south for a key UAA matchup with Washington University-St. Louis (Mo.) at 12:00 p.m. EST. Chicago improves to 8-6-2 overall and 1-4 in the UAA.
The Maroons possessed a 10-2 advantage in shots during the opening stanza, while Case accumulated a 6-4 margin in the second. The hosts scored the match's lone goal when Stanton Coville scored on a header via an assist off a corner kick from Michael Choquette in the 18th minute.
Case's best scoring chance came when junior forward Eric Erb (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) attempted a shot from point-blank range that was saved by Chicago goalkeeper Elek Lane with 24:47 remaining in regulation.
Senior goalkeeper Ben Yabrow (Marietta, Ga./George Walton Comprehensive) recorded seven saves and was saddled with the loss. Lane made three stops for the Maroons.
Following Sunday's match in St. Louis, the Spartans return home for their regular-season finale to take on UAA opponent University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5 at Case Field.
