Derrick Russell enters his sixth season on the Spartan coaching staff in 2015-16. Russell, a former Division I standout at Canisius College (N.Y.), came to Case Western Reserve following a pair of high school coaching stints in the Cleveland area.
Russell served as head assistant coach for the Warrensville Heights boy’s varsity team and as the Tigers’ head freshman coach from 2000-04. Prior to his time at Warrensville Heights, he coached for four seasons with the Cleveland Heights varsity and junior varsity teams.
A four-year starter as a player at Canisius, Russell was named to the College’s All-Century Team. He later coached in the collegiate ranks as an assistant with St. Anselm College (N.H.).
Russell earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Canisius in 1987.
