Phan & Calhoun Claim First UAA Weekly Football Honors of 2017

Case Western Reserve University junior wide receiver Justin Phan was named the University Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week, and senior safety/ kick returner Cody Calhoun earned the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week award, after both helped lead the 19th-ranked Spartans to an opening-week 34-14 win at the University of Chicago on Saturday.

Phan caught 15 passes on Saturday to match the program's record for receptions in a game, set twice by former Spartan Jason Cellura.  He totaled 112 yards and two touchdowns, scoring on an 11-yard pass from Rob Cuda with 10:35 remaining in the first quarter to cut the Chicago lead to 14-7, and tied the game at 14-apiece with a 10-yard touchdown catch with 4:24 left in the third quarter.  During the third quarter alone, he caught eight passes for 65 yards.  Phan also returned a pair of punts for 61 yards, including a 52-yard punt return in the third quarter.

Calhoun returned three kicks for 92 yards to lead all UAA players with a 30.7 yard average.  All three of Calhoun's returns came in the first quarter, as the team co-captain notched distances of 32 yards, 21 yards and 39 yards on his three attempts.  He added a solid defensive performance as well, finishing the game with five tackles and limiting Chicago to just 117 passing yards, including just 21 in the second half of the game.

This was the third career UAA Athlete of the Week honor for Phan, who earned the award for his play on special teams twice last season.  It was Calhoun's second career UAA Athlete of the Week award, after he previously earned it for his play on defense during his sophomore campaign.

The Spartans will have a bye this weekend, before hosting Grove City College at DiSanto Field for their home opener on Saturday, September 16th at 7:00 p.m.

CWRU football players have earned the following weekly honors during the 2017 season:
