Doolin Named First-Team Academic All-American® for Second-Straight Year
Capital One DIII Academic All-America® Football Team
TOWSON, Md. – For the second-consecutive year, Case Western Reserve University senior defensive end Richard Doolin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Football First Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Doolin is one of just 25 football student-athletes from around the nation and the only University Athletic Association player to earn first-team status.
An accounting major with a 3.97 grade point average, Doolin amassed 43 tackles, including 10 for loss, with 3.5 sacks. He also recorded seven quarterback hurries and forced a fumble on a defensive unit that that ranked seventh in the nation in rush defense (75.8 ypg), 12th in scoring defense (12.9 ppg) and fourth in red zone efficiency (52%).
A three-time All-University Athletic Association selection and three-time Academic All-UAA performer, Doolin finished his career with 145 tackles with 33.5 for loss and 19 sacks.
CWRU finished the season at 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the UAA with a fourth conference championship in five years (2007-09, '11).
The Capital One Academic All-America® Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Only student-athletes named to their respective Academic All-District First Team become eligible for Academic All-America® consideration.
Since the program's inception, a total of 73 Case Western Reserve student-athletes have been named Academic All-American® -- that number includes two already this fall. In 2010 and 2011, a combined 12 Spartans received Academic All-America® acclaim.
