Capetillo & Murphy Selected as UAA Baseball Athletes of the Week

Case Western Reserve University senior designated hitter Alex Capetillo and senior pitcher Ben Murphy were named the University Athletic Association Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after helping lead the 11th-ranked Spartans to a series sweep at Brandeis University last weekend.

Capetillo hit .667 (12-of-18) including three doubles and a home run, while scoring five runs, driving in four, walking twice, and stealing three bases on five attempts.  He finished the weekend slugging 1.000, while recording an on base percentage of .714.  He went three-for-four with two runs scored, a double and a stolen base during a 5-2 win over Brandeis in the opening game of the series, and then followed that with a four-for-six game with two runs, two RBIs, a home run and two doubles during a 12-6 win in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.  On Sunday, he began the day by reaching base on a pair of walks and stealing a base, as CWRU topped Brandeis 8-3.  In the final game of the series, he went five-for-six with a run, two RBIs, and a stolen base in a 14-8 victory.

For the season, Capetillo is batting .553 (21-for-38) with nine runs scored, three doubles, a triple, a home run, seven RBIs and three stolen bases.  This was his first career UAA Athlete of the Week honor.

Murphy helped limit Brandeis University to two runs on four hits over 7.2 innings during the Spartans' 8-3 win over the Judges.  The righty started and did not walk a batter in the game, while striking out five batters and yielding just one earned run.  He retired the first nine batters he faced in the game, and 17 of the first 18 Brandeis hitters in the game.

Murphy improved to 4-1 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 1.55, and opponents are hitting just .216 against him this season.  The honor marked the first UAA Athlete of the Week award of Murphy's career.

The Spartans have won seven-straight games to improve to 20-3 overall, and hold a three-game lead in the UAA standings with a 7-1 conference record.  CWRU will return home for a four-game series against New York University this weekend, starting with a 3:00 p.m. game on Friday, April 13th at Nobby's Ballpark.
