Spartan Baseball Team Splits Key Doubleheader at Wooster
WOOSTER, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team combined to score 28 runs, while splitting a key regional doubleheader with the College of Wooster on Sunday, April 17 at Art Murray Field. Despite rallying from seven down, the Spartans lost game one, 15-14, but were able to rebound with a 14-2 victory in game two.
The Spartans have now won 12-of-14 and improve to 26-12 for the season. Wooster moves to 17-11.
In the opener, Case got on the board in the first when junior second baseman Bobby Marko (Lyndhurst, OH/Brush) drove a two-run double to right center. Wooster answered with three in its half of the inning as Greg VanHorn got the ball rolling with a leadoff homerun down the left field line. After scoreless innings for both sides in the second and third, the Scots outscored the Spartans 5-2 in the fourth and 4-1 in the sixth. Wooster's fourth inning got started with a Spartan error and was highlighted by a grand slam from Zac Mathie.
Both sides then scored a pair of runs in the sixth as Wooster led 14-7. Undaunted, the Spartans rallied with seven runs in the top of the eighth inning. Three Wooster errors opened the flood gates and Case got a key two-run single by junior centerfielder Matt Richards (San Juan Capistrano, CA/San Clemente). However, the Scots were able to re-gain control in the bottom of the eighth as Mathie recorded one of his seven runs batted-in for the contest following Case's fourth error.
Freshman reliever Jose Vega (Strongsville, OH/Padua Franciscan) allowed one unearned run in the eighth en route to falling to 3-2 for the season.
At the plate, Marko was 4-for-6 with a homer, two doubles and five RBI. Senior designated hitter Cory Pecoraro (Strongsville, OH/Benedictine) also went 4-for-6 and junior rightfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) was 2-for-2 with four walks, four runs scored and an RBI.
In game two, the game was tied at one apiece until the Spartans exploded for six runs in the fifth, two in the seventh and five more in the ninth. Senior catcher Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) got the fifth started with an RBI single. Alexander also singled home one and sophomore first baseman Brett Ossola (Potomac, MD/Bullis School) doubled home another.
Freshman Andrew Frey (Mentor, OH/Mentor) hit a two-run homer in the sixth – his first career – while Richards and Mullins each singled in two during the ninth.
On the mound, freshman Ray Kelly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) turned in a second consecutive stellar outing. In eight innings, he allowed two earned runs with seven strikeouts. In 14 innings this week, Kelly was 2-0 while only allowing two runs.
