Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Sept. 5: Justin Phan and Elle Zadina

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University junior Justin Phan, a wide receiver on the football team, and senior Elle Zadina, a midfielder on the women's soccer team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performance's this past weekend.

Phan set a program single-game record for the 19th-ranked Spartans during the team's season-opening 34-14 win at the University of Chicago on Saturday.  Phan caught 15 passes in the game matching the program's record for receptions in a game, set twice by former Spartan Jason Cellura.  He totaled 112 yard and two touchdowns, scoring on an 11-yard pass from Rob Cuda with 10:35 remaining in the first quarter, cutting the Chicago lead to 14-7, and tied the game at 14 apiece with a 10-yard touchdown catch with 4:24 left in the third quarter.  During the third quarter alone, he caught eight passes for 65 yards.  Phan also returned a pair of punts for 61 yards, including a 52-yard punt return in the third quarter.  The Spartans will have a bye this weekend, before hosting Grove City College at DiSanto Field for their home opener on Saturday, September 16th at 7:00 p.m.

Zadina scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans during the team's 2-1 season-opening win against Chatham University on Friday. Zadina's game-winner, her second goal of the game, came at the 83:41 mark of play. Zadina finished the game with four total shots, including the two on goal. On Saturday, Zadina took two shots, including one on goal, during the team's 2-0 win against Pitt-Bradford. The Spartans opened their 2017 season with a 2-0-0 record during the first week of competition.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Kevin Chrissis (football) just 15 seconds following a game-tying touchdown for CWRU, Chrissis picked off a tipped pass from Chicago quarterback Campbell Garrett on second and 10 with 4:09left to play, returning it 29 yards for a touchdown and giving the Spartans their first lead of the game, 21-14.  It was the first interception returned for a touchdown by a CWRU player since former Spartan Aaron Weisberg did so against Carnegie Mellon on November 14, 2015.  It was the first career interception for Chrissis, who added two tackles and a pass breakup during his first career start.

Cody Calhoun (football) returned three kicks for 92 yards to lead all University Athletic Association players with a 30.7 yard average.  All three of Calhoun's returns came in the first quarter, as the team co-captain notched distances of 32 yards, 21 yards and 39 yards on his three attempts.  He added a solid defensive performance as well, finishing the game with five tackles and limiting Chicago to just 117 passing yards, including just 21 in the second half of the game.

Michael Balog (men's soccer) scored the game-winning goal on Friday night to help the Spartans top the University of Mount Union 1-0 in the team's season-opener. On Sunday, Balog helped the Spartans battle to a 0-0 tie against DePauw University. He finished the contest with a game-high six shots.

Calvin Boyle (men's soccer) played 200 shutout minutes in net for the Spartans during the team's opening week of the season. On Friday night against Mount Union, Boyle made six saves to help CWRU secure the 1-0 shutout victory. During Sunday's 0-0 double overtime tie against DePauw, Boyle turned away three shots.

Lauren Unterborn (women's soccer) allowed one goal and made seven saves to secure the 2-1 win against Chatham on Friday. Unterborn followed up that performance with a 2-0 shutout victory over Pitt-Bradford on Saturday. She made four saves throughout her 90 minutes in net.

Brianna Lemon (volleyball) was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Ohio Northern Tournament, after helping the Spartans to two wins in four matches to open the season. Lemon led the team with 41 kills (2.73 per set) and 57 digs (3.80 per set) during the four matches.

Faith Ellis (volleyball) tallied 127 assists over the four matches this past weekend. Her 8.47 assists per set currently lead all University Athletic Association players. During the team's 3-1 win over Thomas More College on Friday, she totaled a career-high 55 assists, while also contributing nine digs to the team total.

Aidan DeSanto (men's cross country) was the team's top finisher at the season-opening Sudeck Sunset Classic Stampede on Friday.  DeSanto placed second overall among the 66 runners in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 19:33.8, an 11-second improvement on his time at the meet last season.

Madeline Lindemann (women's cross country) helped lead the Spartans to a win at the season-opening Sudeck Sunset Classic Stampede on Friday, finishing fourth out of 54 runners in the women's 4,000-meter race.  Lindemann was second among CWRU finishers, as her time of 15:38.2 marked a one-minute, eight-second improvement over her finish in the race last season.
