Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Apr. 23: Casey McConihe and Maren Waldner

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Casey McConihe, a pitcher on the baseball team, and senior Maren Waldner, an infielder on the softball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

McConihe pitched five scoreless innings to help the 10th-ranked Spartans clinch at least a share of the 2018 University Athletic Association Baseball Championship.  McConihe combined with Scott Kutschke to record the team’s third shutout of the season with a 4-0 win in their season finale in Saint Louis on Sunday.  The left-handed pitcher needed just 61 pitches to get through his five innings of work, striking out five and allowing just three hits without walking a batter.  He did not allow a runner to reach third base in his outing, and left a runner stranded at second in four innings, including the fourth, when he struck out back-to-back Washington hitters to end a threat by the Bears. McConihe earned the win in the game to improve to 3-1 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 2.94, and has held opponents to a .214 batting average.  With Sunday’s win, the Spartans secured the third UAA Title in program history, ending their conference schedule with a 12-4 record and improving to 25-6 overall.

Waldner led the Spartans’ offensively as they posted a 3-1 record against Washington University (Mo.) this past weekend. Waldner batted .538 (7-for-13) and scored three runs, while also hitting one home run and driving in five RBI’s. In the Spartans’ 11-3 win over WashU on Saturday, Waldner led the team with a three-for-four performance, including a two-run homer that secured the run-rule shortened victory over the Bears. For the season, Waldner leads the team with a .527 batting average (59-for-112), and has scored 32 runs, hit two home runs and driven in 25 RBI’s. Waldner currently leads the University Athletic Association in batting average and ranks third in runs batted in. CWRU improved to 23-8 overall and 10-6 in UAA with the three wins this past weekend.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Alex Capetillo (baseball) hit safely in three of the four games during the 10th-ranked Spartans series split at Washington University (Mo.) last weekend.  Capetillo hit .375 (six-for-16) with a run scored and three runs batted in, and added a walk to raise his on base percentage to .412 for the week. Capetillo leads all CWRU hitters this season with a .471 batting average, and has scored 13 runs while driving in 13.

Jonathan Powell (men’s tennis) helped the 18th-ranked Spartans to a pair of wins on Saturday, going 2-0 in singles matches and 1-1 in doubles play. Powell improved to 4-0 this season in singles play, while raising his doubles record to 14-4.  With the two wins, the Spartans will head into the 2018 UAA Championships with a 15-9 record.

Ilissa Hamilton (softball) helped the Spartans win three of the four games against Washington University (Mo.) this past weekend. Hamilton went 2-0 on the mound, allowing four earned runs in 13.0 innings pitched, while striking out 21 batters. At the plate, she went two-for-nine with one RBI and one run scored. For the season, Hamilton has a 10-4 overall record, including 11 complete games. She has totaled 97.0 innings pitched, allowing 48 earned runs on 89 hits. She currently leads the team with 104 strikeouts and ranks second in the University Athletic Association.

Nimi Gupta (women’s track and field) led the Spartan women to a third-place finish at the Sparky Adams Invitational this past weekend. Gupta won the hammer throw with a mark of 46.92 meters, which was the best mark in the UAA this week.
