Case Western Reserve University junior Justin Phan, a wide receiver on the football team, and junior Hillary Hellmann, a guard/forward on the women’s basketball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Phan had a career-day for the 16th-ranked Spartans during the team’s 45-16 loss to the second-ranked University of Mount Union in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday.  Phan caught 12 passes for a career-high 169 yards in the game, including a season-long 60 yard catch in the second quarter that setup one of the team’s two touchdowns.  It was the most receptions and yards allowed to a receiver by the Mount Union defense this season, and just the second 100 yard receiving game allowed to a receiver by the Purple Raiders in 2017.  He finished the year with 62 receptions for 778 yards and seven touchdowns, all career highs.  The Spartans ended their 2017 season with an 11-1 overall record.

Hellmann led the Spartans to a 1-1 record at the David Wells Classic, averaging 22.0 points and 7.0 rebounds over the two games.  Hellmann shot 48.3% from the floor (14-of-29) and 42.9% from three point range (six-of-14), while adding an 83.3% effort from the free throw line (10-of-12).  She scored 19 points and collected four rebounds during the team’s 78-58 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday night, shooting seven-of-17 from the floor, including a three-of-eight mark from long range, and adding a steal and an assist.  On Saturday, she scored 11 points in the final 3:15 of the game to lead the Spartans to a 74-73 come-from-behind win over Pomona-Pitzer.  Hellmann shot seven-of-12 overall and three-of-six on three-point attempts, and finished the game with 25 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal for her second double-double of the campaign and eighth of her career.  She leads all Spartan players this season with 20.8 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per contest.  Hellmann and the Spartans have opened their 2017-18 campaign with a 2-2 overall record.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: T.J. Duckett (men’s basketball) averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds over three games for the Spartans last week.  Duckett shot 62.5% from the floor (20-of-32) and 64.7% from the free throw line (11-of-17), adding three blocks.  His best performance came during the team’s 74-69 win over Mount St. Joseph College, during which he scored a career-high 34 points and collected 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and the 13th of his career.  Duckett shot 70.0% from the floor (14-of-20) during the game with three blocks, and a steal, while going six-of-nine from the free throw line.  He added a 13-point, seven rebound effort in a 74-69 loss at home against Denison on Tuesday, and a four point, seven rebound day against Ohio Northern on Sunday.  For the season, the 2016-17 All-UAA First Team selection is averaging 12.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.  Duckett and the Spartans have opened the 2017-18 season with a 1-4 overall record.
